The way a website appeals to it's viewer is an undeniably important aspect in determining whether or not it is a good website. A nice looking website will draw people in, and invite them to take a second glance. The days when the web was full of black and white websites are long gone and in this day websites need color and design. Your website should pop out of the screen, but at the same time it should not assault the viewer. If your design is too wild it will drive people away faster than a dull one will.
When creating a theme for your website you should choose borders and backgrounds that go well with your logo. Clashing or glaring colors should be avoided as they do not appeal to many people. Soft colors tend to be better than harsh ones, if people feel like looking at your website makes their eyes hurt they are not likely to stick around. Another thing to avoid is flashing text or backgrounds especially on the homepage. Flashing makes things harder to read and they can also be hard on the eyes.
There is nothing wrong with using black or white or both, but websites need color to stand out. Your Logo especially should have color as that is the first thing that is likely to catch the viewers eye. Remember while your content is important, how it good it is won't matter if it is presented poorly. Lastly your design should include everything in your website. Design is more than just the background borders and Logo. The color of your text, links and any pictures are all part of your design as well and should be included in the planning process.
