Joomla! and Security

As we mentioned in our last post, on Thursday, October 22, 2015, Joomla! released a critical security release/version update.  The

release was available first thing in the morning, and we had all of our sites updated by the afternoon. Keeping our customers' sites safe is very important to us.  Later, we also found out that our sites were already protected from the vulnerability because we have installed RS Firewall on all of our sites.

Joomla! did not release the details of the vulnerability, of course, because they did not want hackers to know it before they got the patch out.  I did read one article which said that, within four hours of the the release of the security patch, hackers had developed code to exploit it and were sending it out on the web.  According to the Joomla! security article, within 4 days there were 14,000 attempts to exploit the vulerability on Joomla! websites.

All this may make one wonder if Joomla! is indeed a safe platform for websites.  Actually it is very safe and tends to hacked less often than similar content management systems, like Wordpress.  The Joomla! team keeps on top of security holes and releases updates when they are found.  Platforms like Joomla! have to constantly grow and evolve because hackers are constantly trying to find new ways to exploit websites.  Plus Trinity Web Hosting installs RS Firewall on all of our sites to double the protection.

Some website hacks are simply malicious attacks trying to take over or cripple websites, but the more sophisticated attacks attempt to use your site and your webspace to send out spam emails or to create links to other sites and increase the search engine ranking of those sites.  The latter are hacks that don't want to be found, they just want to hide on your site like a parasite using your resources for their own gain.  RS Firewall particularly protects against these types of hacks.
